True Light Girls’ College was established in 1973 by the Kowloon True Light Middle School Management Board, with the assistance of the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China, to commemorate the centenary of the True Light Alma Mater, to realise the vision of the True Light founder, Harriet Noyes, for developing girls’ education, and to meet the need of providing quality education with English as the learning and teaching medium in Hong Kong. A new era of school development came when the school new annex came into operation in 2006.

    Ms Harriet Noyes
    The school founder, Ms Harriet Noyes, founded the True Light Seminary, the second women’s school in South China, in Kam Lei Fau (Sha Kei) in Guangzhou. Ms Noyes, at age 23, was assigned by the American Presbyterion Mission North to come to China in 1867 to preach the Gospel. Seeing the total neglect of women’s education in the late Qing period, Ms Noyes was determined to establish a women’s school in China.

  • 1878

    Destroyed in a fire, the school campus was moved to Renji Street in Guangzhou. It was expanded to include an elementary school, a women’s school, a teacher training class and a women’s Bible school.

  • 1917

    A secondary section called ‘True Light Middle School’ was established in Bai He Dong in Guangzhou with Dr. J.W. Creighton as the Principal.

  • 1935

    In 1935, Dr. Ho Yam Tong established the True Light Primary School at 26 Caine Road in Hong Kong that laid down the foundation of the later True Light Middle School of Hong Kong. Dr. Ho was the Principal of True Light Middle School in Bai He Dong from 1934 until 1944.

  • 1937-1945

    During the war against the Japanese invasion, the school was moved to Hong Kong, then northern Guangdong, and then to the border region of Hunan-Guangxi. When Japan surrendered in August 1945, the school at Shuangxi Shan in Lian Yuan returned to Bai He Dong in Guangzhou and teaching resumed in October 1945.

  • 1947-1960

    Principal Ma Yee Ying became the Principal of True Light Middle School in Bai He Dong in 1947. She left for Hong Kong in 1949 to found the Kowloon True Light Middle School at 115 Waterloo Road. The new building came into operation in Kowloon Tong in 1960.

1970s: TRUE LIGHT PASSES ON

    The Kowloon True Light Middle School Management Board, with the assistance of the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China, founded True Light Girls’ College to commemorate the centenary of the True Light Alma Mater and to carry out the vision of our school founder for expanding English education for girls.

  • 1973

    The school opened in September with 13 teachers and 9 classes from S1 to S3.

  • 1973

    Ms. Faith Ko Man Wan was appointed as the founding Principal.

  • 1973

    Rev. Peter Wong was the chairman of the School Management Board and the School Supervisor in 1973.

  • 1973

    The Student Fellowship and the Drama Club were founded. They have become the longest-lasting student clubs in True Light.

  • 1974

    The School Inauguration Ceremony, Thanksgiving Service and the Lantern Passing Ceremony were held on 30th November, 1974.

    The Form Associations and the Science Society were established.

  • 1976

    The school size grew into 17 classes from S1 to S6 with 25 teachers and 659 students. Our students sat for the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) for the first time, and the passing rate reached 83.16%. The House System was established. The Zonta Z Club and the Art and Design Club were set up.

  • 1977

    There was a total of 735 students with 21 classes from S1 to S7. The first Athletics Meet was held and has since become an annual school event.

  • 1978

    The first batch of students studying here since S1 sat for the HKCEE. The passing rate rose to 93.86%. The “Principal Cup” and the “Alumni Cup” were first awarded to the House which won the Overall Championship in the Athletics Meet or the Best Overall Performance Prize, respectively. Children from Chak Yan Centre School were invited to the school for a Christmas Celebration.

  • 1979

    The Zonta Z Club was awarded the ‘Most Active Zonta Z Club’ prize for many times during 1979 – 1980 school year.

1980s: LIGHT OF CHRIST SHINES UPON

    There were a total of 24 classes with 898 students in our school. The school social worker service started. The Social Welfare Department arranged for a social worker to visit the school once a week. Vietnamese children from refugee camps were invited to take part in our Christmas celebrations.

  • 1981

    Our school joined the first Joint True Light Schools Athletic Meet.

  • 1982

    Chan Man Sze became the first student in our school to obtain 9 distinctions in the HKCEE.

  • 1983

    The 10th School Anniversary Ceremony was held and officiated by the Director of Education Department, Mr. Topley.

  • 1983

    The School Management Board Scholarship was founded to award and encourage those students with excellent performance in the HKCEE. The first Swimming Gala was held. It then became a biennial school event. Our school joined the Sister Schools Scheme of the Education Department and provided recreational and voluntary services for the mentally retarded children at Caritas Lok Kan School from 1983 to 1988.

  • 1984

    The Community Youth Club was set up.

  • 1985

    The Computer curriculum was first introduced, with lessons conducted in a Computer Room. 

  • 1986

    Human Biology was introduced as a HKCEE subject for the Arts students. Five issues of True Light Girls’ College School Newspaper were published between 1986 and 1991.

  • 1988

    In the 15th School Anniversary Ceremony, the Director of Education, Mr. Li Yuet Ting, J.P., was invited to officiate at the unveiling ceremony of the School Founder Brief History Plaque and the inauguration ceremony of the School Percussion Marching Band.

1990s: GIRLS’ EDUCATION BECKONS

    The annual “Five Loaves and Two Fishes” fund-raising function was held for the first time before the Easter Holiday.

  • 1993

    The dawn-breaking “Family Gathering Day at School” was held with different kinds of educational games and recreational activities for parents and students.

  • 1994

    In the 20th Anniversary Celebration, the opening ceremony of the “Students’ Green Declaration” was held by our student leaders and student representatives of other schools as a milestone of our environmental protection movement.

  • 1995

    The True Light Girls’ College Alumni Association was established with Ms. Yeung Pui Shan elected as the first Chairlady.

  • 1996

    Our School was ranked Division One in the Interschool Athletics Championship.

  • 1997

    Ng Jia Yan obtained eight distinctions in the 1997 HKCEE.

  • 1998

    Mr. To Yiu Kwan was appointed as the new Principal.

  • 1998

    Rev. Wu Ping Kit succeeded the retired Rev. Lee Ching Chee as the School Supervisor. Our school was listed by the Education Department as one of the 114 English as the medium of instruction (EMI) schools.

  • 1998

    Our School Supervisor Rev. Wu Ping Kit led a fund-raising walkathon in 1998 to celebrate our school’s 25th Anniversary.

  • 1999

    The four True Light secondary schools started to jointly organise overseas study tours during the summer vacation.

  • 1999

    A 6-day cycle system was introduced and the school library service became computerised. The Parent Teacher Association was established with Mr. Lee Wing Kei as the first Chairman.

2000s: COLLEGE REACHES NEW HORIZONS

    The Student Union and the School Philharmonic Orchestra were founded.

  • 2000

    The School Newspaper, named “Echo”, was re-published.

  • 2000

    The new Computer Room was officially opened. The Art Room, the Chemistry Laboratory and the Cookery Room were refurbished, and the staff room was renovated with access to the Internet from the teachers’ desks.

  • 2001

    Students’ performance in the HKCEE reached new heights. Besides excellent individual results, the distinction and credit percentages of many subjects were above 85%.

  • 2003

    The 30th School Anniversary Celebration was held with a broad spectrum of performances.

    The first Annual Concert titled “Circus Extravaganza” was successfully held to celebrate the 30th School Anniversary Celebration.

  • 2004

    Leung Pak Yee obtained 5 distinctions in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination. AL Business Studies and AS Liberal Studies were introduced to our curriculum.

  • 2005

    The school hall was refurnished and the school canteen was renovated into a mini-hall cum canteen.

  • 2006

    The Farewell Ceremony of the Backhill Court was held in 2006.

  • 2006

    The five-storey New Annex was formally inaugurated in the 33rd School Anniversary Ceremony.

  • 2007

    Our school was awarded a grand slam of all the four first prizes in the Schools’ Roof Greening Competition. Dr. Lily Sun Sui-fong, granddaughter of Dr. Sun Yixian, visited the school and shared with students the political career and patriotic ideas of her grandfather. The school lobby was renovated with the installation of the Smart Card System.

    Mr. Tam Kim Hung was appointed as our third principal.

  • 2008

    The 35th School Anniversary Concert was held at the Jockey Club Auditorium of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, staging our first English Musical, “The Wizard of Oz”.

  • 2008

    The Sky Garden and the Digital Creative Arts Centre were both officially inaugurated in the 35th School Anniversary Ceremony.

  • 2009

    The Performing Art Gallery was set up in the New Annex and was officially inaugurated in the 36th School Anniversary Ceremony. The Biology Laboratory was refurbished and a Prayer Room was newly built.

    The interflow with the Education undergraduates of Dongguk University from South Korea was held for the first time. Several more interflows were organised in the later years.

  • 2011

    The Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) was established. The Cross-Curricular Day was introduced. The E-learning Pilot Scheme was jointly launched with the other three True Light Secondary Schools in Hong Kong.

  • 2013

    Cheung Yik In attained 5** in 7 subjects & 5* in Mathematics (Extended Part) in 2013 HKDSE.

  • 2013

    The school celebrated its 40th Anniversary with the 40th Anniversary Variety Show and Musical, “Godspell”.

  • 2013

    The Light Passing Ceremony also commemorated the 40th School Anniversary Celebration.

  • 2014

    The S6 Form Association Night was organised for the first time. Career Education was extended to the Secondary Three curriculum.

  • 2016

    The first 3D mural painting, The Cross Passage, was created. 

  • 2017

    Yuen Lok Yi was awarded the 9th Kowloon Region Outstanding Student Award. It was the sixth consecutive year for our students to obtain the award.

  • 2017

    The 3D Mural Painting, The Star Bright Sky, was unveiled.

  • 2018

    The 45th Anniversary was celebrated with the inauguration of STEM Education Centre. The Secretary for Education, Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun Hung, JP, was invited to officiate at the ceremonies. 

  • 2018

    The 45th Anniversary Original Musical, Casting, was held in Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

  • 2018

    The Zonta Z Installation Ceremony 2018-2019 was successfully held in our school to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the mother club, Zontians.

  • 2018

    Our School Dance Team won the Honours Award for ten consecutive years in the Schools Dance Festival (Western Dance) and the Gold Award for 8 years in the Hong Kong Open Dance Contest.

  • 2019

    Life Planning Salon was launched to enhance students’ self-understanding and goal setting.

  • 2019

    Our students were crowned champions in the “Supporting Mothers’ Breastfeeding Journey” Secondary School Short Video Competition 2019 (Senior Secondary Category).

    Our students won the championship in the Social Innovation Community 4.0 Competition 2020-2021. They designed a food waste collection vehicle – Easy Car – which also won the “Innovative Design Award” and “Best Social Efficiency Award” in the Competition.

    Our students produced the 3D Mural Painting “Missed and Mixed Touches” in the Performance Art Gallery.

  • 2021

    Our Old Girls’ Choir virtual performance was aired on an episode of “The Arts on Air” on Radio Television Hong Kong.

    Life-wide Learning Day 2020-2021

    The “Life-wide Learning Day” was organised at the Ocean Park to enrich our students’ knowledge of marine life, environmental conservation and eco-friendly lifestyle.

  • 2021

    Our students won the championship in the Social Innovation Community 4.0 Competition 2021-2022. They designed a prototype – EGames Truck – with hope to improve the mental and social wellbeing of the elderly in the community.

  • 2021

    The TL 150th Anniversary Life Planning Sharing Day was held to give True Light girls a fascinating insight into some authentic work environments as well as guiding them to make informed choices in their life planning.

    The Life-wide Learning Day 2021-2022 was held at Hong Kong Disneyland to help our students cultivate True Light qualities, encompassing “Persevering”, “Respectful”, “Responsible”, “Positive”, “Self-disciplined” and “Thankful”.

  • 2021

    The True Light Joint School Athletic Meet (2021-2022) was successfully held at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground. Our S6 student Chan Yee Hing clinched the gold medals in the Senior Form 800m and 1500m races.

  • 2022

    Our S6 student Tweety Lam Tsz Yue was awarded the Kowloon Region Outstanding Students’ Association – Outstanding Student in Senior Form.

  • 2022

    A student sculpture, “True Light, True Life”, was launched. It was modelled on the real size of one of our students. This white sculpture and the white wall behind it are used as the “screen” for a light animation to depict an unforgettable and typical journey of a True Light girl.

    The 150th School Anniversary of True Light Knowledge Fair on Values Education – Teachers’ Professional Development Day was successfully held.

    Our students were crowned champions in the 5th Hong Kong Secondary School Peer Mediation Competition.

    True Light 150th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service was successfully held at the Xiqu Centre. All True Light schools jointly organised this event to commemorate the 150th founding anniversary of True Light.
