Education Support Provided for Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) Student(s)

School Support Summary for the 2025/26 School Year

Name of School:                                       True Light Girls’ College                                                            

Our school was provided with additional funding by the Education Bureau in the 2025/26 school year. With reference to school-based circumstances, we provided support for our NCS student(s) and assigned a dedicated teacher/team to coordinate relating matters. Details are as follows : 

(1) With reference to the learning progress and needs of NCS student(s), our school adopted the following modes to enhance the support for learning of Chinese of NCS student(s) in the 2025/26  school year:

  • Appointing 1 additional teacher(s) and 2 teaching assistant(s)(including assistant(s) of diffrent race(s)) to support the learning of Chinese of NCS student(s).

    In-class support provided in Chinese Language lessons:

  • Pull-out learning (Level(s): S1-S6)
  • Adopting a school-based Chinese Language curriculum and/or adapted learning and teaching materials(Level(s): S1-S6)

Other support :

  • Chinese learning group(s) (Level(s): S1- S6)
  • After School Tutorials on NCSS Chinese curriculum for Senior Form NCS Students（S4 – S6）
  • After School Tutorials on NCSS Chinese curriculum for Junior Form NCS Students（S1 – S3）
  • Paired-reading scheme(s) for Junior Form NCS Students（S1 – S3）

(2) Our school’s measures for creating an inclusive learning environment included :

  • Translating major school circulars/important matters on school webpage
  • Organising activities which promote cultural integration:
    • Organise various festive activities to enrich NCSS understanding of Chinese culture
    • Holding workshops and courses of fragrant sachet and Chinese hairpin to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture
    • Organize cultural tourism activities — including visits to the flower market and performances at the Xiqu Centre — to deepen non-Chinese-speaking students’ understanding of traditional Chinese culture.
    • Organize Talent of World  activities to cultivate students’ understanding of different cultural art.
    • Hosting International Week to let students learn about cultures from different regions of the world, such as Southeast Asia, China, and the Western countries.

(3) Our school’s measures for promoting home-school cooperation with parents of NCS student(s) included :

  • Assigning an English-speaking assistant teacher to facilitate the communication with parents of NCS student(s)
  • Discussing the learning progress (including learning of Chinese) of NCS student(s) with their parents on a regular basis
  • Providing parents of NCS student(s) with information on school choices/further studies/career pursuits for their children

（一）本校按非華語學生的學習進度和需要，在 2025/26 學年採用以下方式加 強支援他們的中文學習︰

  • 聘請 1 名額外教師及 2 名教學助理(包括不同種族的助理)，以支援非華語學生學習中文

中文科課堂上提供的支援:

（二） 本校建構共融校園的措施包括︰

  • 翻譯主要學校通告／學校網頁的重要事項
  • 舉辦促進文化共融的活動：
  • 舉辦不同的節日活動，讓非華語學生了解中國傳統文化
  • 舉辦髮簪和香包工作坊，讓非華語學生學習和體驗中國文化
  • 舉辦文化觀光活動，透過參觀花市以及戲曲中心演出，加深非華語學生對中國傳統文化的認識
  • 舉辦「世界之才藝」活動，培養同學對不同文化藝術的認識
  • 舉辦「國際週」活動讓學生有機會了解不同地區如東南亞、中國以及西方國家的文化。

（三） 本校向非華語學生家長推廣家校合作的措施包括︰

  • 聘請會說英語的教學助理促進與非華語學生家長的溝通
  • 定期與非華語學生的家長討論其子女的學習進度（包括中文學習）
  • 為非華語學生的家長提供有關其子女選校／升學／就業的資訊

On 30th September, the school held activities to commemorate Martyrs’ Day and celebrate the 77th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. The day commenced with a whole-school flag-raising ceremony, during which the Principal delivered a speech encouraging students to remember the sacrifices of national martyrs, reflect on their civic responsibilities, and cultivate national pride.

 

In the afternoon assembly, Legislative Council Member, President of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, and CPPCC National Committee Member Professor Lau Chi-pang delivered a talk entitled “Soft Power Building and National Confidence” (軟實力建設和民族自信). Professor Lau encouraged students to take pride in the nation’s cultural heritage and contribute actively to its ongoing development.

The school held the “True Light Moongazing Night” 「秋月映真光 親子團圓夜」 on the evening of 18th September 2026 to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The event brought together the Principal, over 10 teachers, and 80 students and parents representing more than 30 families.

 

Participants engaged in festive activities including a lucky draw, Mid-Autumn lantern riddles, and the sharing of mooncakes and seasonal fruits. The event provided a valuable opportunity for families and staff to gather, reinforcing the traditional festival values of unity and reunion.

Rooted in Christian education and the love of Christ, the school organised the annual Education Sunday Service for Secondary 1 students at The Church of Christ in China Mongkok Church, accompanied by the Principal and their teachers.

 

The service featured hymns of praise and a sermon by Rev. Fung Tin Chung entitled “How Can We Not Love?”, based on Chapters 3 and 4 of the Book of Jonah. Following the message, Rev Cheung Hon-keung offered a prayer and benediction for the students. The event concluded with refreshments and fellowship, providing a meaningful opportunity for students to bond.

S5 Geography students participated in a two-day, one-night Field Study Camp from 17th to 18th September, 2026. Students first visited an organic farm in Mui Wo to examine farming systems, gather soil and water samples, and conduct interviews with local farmers. They then moved to the Caritas Chan Chun Ha Field Studies Centre in Cheung Chau to complete laboratory analyses, group discussions, and presentations, staying overnight at the Caritas Jockey Club Ming Fai Camp.

During the camp, students observed an Augmented Reality (AR) sandbox demonstration—a model identical to the one installed in the school’s Geo Inno Centre—and completed a rock-themed treasure hunt challenge in a record time of 8 minutes and 30 seconds, achieving the top ranking among participating secondary schools. The field trip enabled students to apply geographical concepts through practical research and data analysis.

The Pre-S1 Bridging Course took place to assist incoming S1 students and parents in adapting to the secondary school environment. The course introduced key subjects and served as the foundation for their upcoming studies. During the kick-off ceremony for the year-long orientation scheme “Unlock Your Dream in True Light”, the Principal guided students in setting personal goals. Students also took part in a Day Camp, engaging in team-building activities designed to foster peer relationships and encourage interaction with teachers and social workers.

 

The course concluded on 18th July with the S1 Parent Orientation, which provided families with details regarding academic expectations, school support services, and Parent-Teacher Association activities. Through the programme, students gained the confidence, clear goals, and supportive networks needed to begin their secondary school journey.

The six-month SDG Actioner Challenge for Ethnic Minority Youth Programme concluded at the UNICEF HK School & Youth Programmes Acknowledgement Ceremony on 12th September.

 

Our students served as youth representatives on stage during the opening ceremony. In a subsequent session, they shared their learnings and experiences regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with guests. The programme inspires our students to take concrete actions to advocate for SDGs. The representatives served as a role model to remind their peers that even young people can play a part in building a better and more sustainable world.

The Annual General Meeting of the Student Union was held on 11th  September. Aphoriz, the outgoing cabinet for 2025-2026, presented a comprehensive report on the activities they organised, highlighting their dedication to the school over the past year.

 

The Election Forum followed, featuring presentations from the running cabinets, Estrilus and Lumeris, as they outlined their annual plans and engaged in Q&A sessions. After voting, Estrilus emerged victorious, securing a solid majority of votes from students.

 

Led by Chairperson Chui Wai Sum, the new cabinet is committed to embracing True Light’s dynamic spirit and traditional values. They plan to organise a variety of activities and competitions throughout the year, aiming to bring energy to the school and nurture the core qualities of a True Light girl.

On 10th September, the Student Union celebrated Teachers’ Day during the assembly. Students from various forms first showcased their appreciation through paintings, a board display and a live singing performance.  

 

Following the performances, Principal Dr Mui delivered a speech reflecting on the duty and significance of dedicated educators. The Parent-Teacher Association then presented thoughtful gifts to the teachers, accepted on their behalf by the Principal, concluding the event in honour of the teaching staff’s contributions.

On 9th September 2026, students and staff gathered in the school hall to watch the live broadcast of the “Tiangong Class”「天宮課堂 · 港澳專場」conducted by the Shenzhou-23 crew, comprising Commander Dr Zhu Yangzhu, astronaut Mr Zhang Zhiyuan, and Hong Kong’s first astronaut, Dr Lai Ka-ying.

The astronauts provided a virtual tour of the Tiangong space station, demonstrating daily routines, research procedures, and station maintenance in microgravity before answering questions from students across Hong Kong and Macao. Watched with great enthusiasm by the audience, the session deepened students’ understanding of space science and technology while fostering national identity.
