TLGC Historical and Cultural Study Tour to Qingdao 2019
On April 3-7, a total of 36 senior form students and five teachers partook in a civic education study tour to Qingdao and many other places in Shandong. The highlight of this 5-day excursion was a visit to Shandong Qingdao No 15 Middle School in which our students had the opportunity to take the lessons with the students there. Engaging in cross-cultural learning experiences, students gained a better understanding of the learning styles, educational curricula and school cultures in mainland China, while cultivating mutual respect and building closer bonds with local students.

Another highlight was a hiking trip to Mount Tai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and the eastern mountain of the Five Great Mountains of China. Despite its mountainous terrain and hot weather, all teachers and students managed to reach the Jade Emperor Peak. With an opportunity to watch the Chinese Taishan Fengchan Grand Ceremony, the tour gave students and teachers a fascinating insight into Chinese history.

What made our students and teachers understand more about the enduring and profound effect of Confucianism was a visit to the Temple of Confucius in Qufu. Overwhelmed by its grand architectural designs, everyone was impressed with the rich cultural relics such as stately halls, classical courtyards, calligraphy and stone sculptures. These relics revealed the life of Confucius and his influential role in Chinese education and philosophy. There were other popular tourist attractions. For example, the German Governor’s Residence in Qingdao offered us a few glimpses of the imperialist influence in China. The Yangjiabu Folk Art Grand View Garden offered a chance for us to make some kites.

The tour certainly deepened our understanding of the Chinese history and culture, which helped develop our sense of belonging to the Chinese community.
